When it comes to QuickBooks accounting software, firewalls, and security settings frequently appear to be the most difficult to configure. Given that it protects the system from various dangers including malware, viruses, and undesired programs, firewalls are essentially essential applications. Frequently, firewalls prevent QuickBooks desktop and corporate files from accessing the internet. This type of issue can occur while using QuickBooks desktop in a multi-user setting.

Understanding Firewalls

Before you can learn how to establish QuickBooks firewall ports, you must first understand what a firewall is. An essential tool for protecting the computer from malware, viruses, and unwanted applications is a firewall. In some circumstances, the firewall prevents QuickBooks and the company file from accessing the internet. This type of problem is common when using QB desktop in a multi-user scenario. In this instance, you must either upgrade the firewall to the most recent release or manually configure the firewall. The procedure for setting and upgrading the firewall will be covered in a subsequent post.

Methods for Configuring QuickBooks Firewall Ports and Security Settings

Check out the methods below to establish firewall and internet security settings for QuickBooks desktop:

Method 1: Automatically Configure Firewall Ports

The QuickBooks File Doctor tool may be used to fix network-related issues. This utility will unblock all of the restricted ports. This utility may also be used to configure the Windows firewall.

Method 2: Create Manual Exceptions for QuickBooks Firewall Ports

  • Open the QuickBooks Database Server Manager application.
  • QuickBooks Desktop 2018/2019/2020/2021 or 2022 is now available.
  • Make a note of the Port Number and use it to make QuickBooks Firewall Ports exceptions.

Step 1: Manually Add QuickBooks Firewall Port Exceptions

If you are running multiple versions of QuickBooks desktop on the same computer, complete the procedures below for each QuickBooks version:

  • To begin adding firewall port exceptions for QuickBooks, enter the Windows Start menu.
  • Enter Windows Firewall into the search box, then click the Open button.
  • The following step is to choose Advanced Settings.
  • Right-click Inbound Rules and choose New Rule.
  • Select Port and then Next.
  • Check that TCP is chosen.
  • In the Specific ports area, specify the ports that you require for your QuickBooks year versions.
  • The ports can be chosen from the alternatives listed below:
    • XY, QuickBooks Desktop 2023:8091
    • XY, QuickBooks Desktop 2022:8019
    • XY, QuickBooks Desktop 2021:8019
  • Then, enter the port number and click the Next button.
  • When you’re finished, click Allow the Connection and then the Next tab.
  • To complete the procedure, name the rules and click Finish.

These procedures must be repeated for Outbound Rules. The same procedures must be followed, but instead of selecting incoming rules, choose outbound rules, and you’re done. After completing these steps, restart QuickBooks Desktop in QuickBooks multi-user mode to see if the problem has been repaired.

Important Note: It should be noted that QuickBooks Desktop 2021, 2020, and future versions use dynamic ports. These ports are particular firewall ports that were set aside upon installation. This ensures that the QuickBooks program has exclusive access of a certain port.

Step 2: Configure Firewall Exceptions for QuickBooks Programs

QuickBooks makes use of a number of executable files. To discover this list, navigate through the options below to setup the firewall or antivirus software.

  • The fact that you locate Program Files (x86) indicates that you are utilizing a 64-bit operating system.
  • To begin, enter the Start menu and type Windows Firewall.
  • The following step is to go to Advanced Settings and right-click on Inbound Rules.
  • After that, select New Rule >> Program >> Next from the menu.
  • Select the Program Path and Browse choices now.
  • Then locate the file location and click the Next tab.
  • Now, select Allow the Connection and then Next.
  • Also, make sure that all of the files are marked before clicking Next.
  • Make a Rule and give it a name. Then select the Finish option.

Step 3: Antivirus and Windows Firewall Configuration

You must create an exception in Windows Defender or the installed antivirus application.

  • Launch the Windows Defender Security Centre.
  • Then choose Virus and Threat Protection.
  • When you’re finished, click Add an Exclusion and choose the folder.
  • Then, as an exclusion, add the Intuit Folder on the C disc.
  • The final step is to select the OK tab.

Step 4: Setup Firewall Programs

When a user uses several firewalls with varying versions, Intuit is unable to do the Additional configuration configurations. Consult the website of the software’s publisher for assistance. Intuit is not involved in the support of various internet security solutions. As a result, you’d need to add exceptions for QuickBooks firewall ports. If the issue continues, add the following folders to your anti-virus program’s whitelist.

Step 5: Configure QuickBooks Firewall Port Extensions on your antivirus or firewall (3rd Party Configuration)

Ascertain that the TCP is selected. Enter all of the needed ports. See the port number appropriate for your QuickBooks version in the manually set QuickBooks firewall port exclusions. If you have used multiple-year versions of QuickBooks Desktop, add ports for each year. Learn more
